Everybody's wearing a disguise
To hide what they've got left behind their eyes.
But me, I can't cover what I am
Wherever the children go I'll follow them
Bob Dylan, "Abandoned Love"
My current musical obsession, Bob Dylan's "Abandoned Love," on the Biograph collection, is reminding me how much I love the Rolling Thunder Revue sound, and the Desire album, in spite of some of the dubious songwriting. It makes me want to dig up all the Rolling Thunder music we have, although I fear admitting that, because Allan may soon appear with a mountain of bootlegs and outtakes that will quickly bury and kill my interest.
"Abandoned Love" is in turn reminding me of another musical obsession, REM's "Supernatural Superserious," a fascination that started the minute I heard the song, pre-release, in early 2008, and has only barely slacked off in nearly two years.
Everybody here
Comes from somewhere
That they would just as soon forget
And disguise
Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Michael Stipe, "Supernatural Superserious"
As I don't pay attention to a music scene anymore, I had no idea the song was originally titled "Disguised". Worlds collide!
