first day of (someone else's) class

I start notetaking today! I'm nervous, more about the logistics and administrative end than about the notetaking itself. Fortunately every new notetaker is paired with an experienced hand, for at least the first few weeks of classes. That reduces the butterflies a lot.

So far my classes are all at the Oakville campus of Sheridan College - practically down the street. As my class schedule grows, it's likely to include Sheridan's Brampton campus, too. They try to match people and locations - and they always need people to cover the suburban campuses - so I've been hoping for Sheridan College all along.

I'm actually more excited than nervous. As I've been telling you ad nauseum, I've been working in law firms for 17 years, and I'm pretty tired of it. (For the pay I was earning in New York City, I could put up with it indefinitely. Here, not so much.) The prospect of a new way of earning my living, something challenging and interesting, that should still leave me time to write, is exciting.

Extra added bonus! On my first Toronto law firm job - the one that became Dissolving Firm - I made a good friend, pretty rare for me on a day-job. She lives in Oakville, but because she's a new mom, it's been really difficult for us to keep in touch. This week she goes back to work, at a new position... at Sheridan College. Way cool. We're hoping to meet for lunch or coffee on a regular basis.

Those are the kinds of things that confirm my fledgling roots here, that make me say, "I live here now... this is my life." As opposed to the feeling of living in a role-playing game, or in somebody else's life.

In other news, the Red Sox's magic number is 18!
