back

I had a fantastic weekend, filled with the love of good friends and family, good food and a brief New York City fix.

And to top it off, I love coming home. I often feel lonely for friends and family, and although some people insist I see them "often," everything is relative, and it doesn't feel often to me. But when Allan picks me up at the Buffalo airport and we drive to the Peace Bridge, and I see that big Maple Leaf, I feel so happy. Sweet Cody Brown greets me at the door, and we take a walk on the Lake, and I have no trouble remembering why I'm here.

Poor Allan had a tough weekend, working his very long (13- or 14-hour) days, waking up for morning Cody walk (which I would normally do), plus the extra wallop of the time-change. This while I was drinking champagne in a limo with my sister. (Celebrating her 50th birthday in style!) What can I say. Life isn't fair.

But yesterday was one of the Official Holidays of KaminkerWoodLand: Opening Day.* Schilling looked dandy, Coco Crisp and Alex Gonzalez made us happy, the Big Man hit a dinger, the Red Sox won and all was right with the world.

Tonight we get our final vaccinations for Peru. I'm counting days to the end of my full-time temp work, and to Peru. Lots to do before then, but it feels manageable.

I'm hoping for some more interesting blogging later this week, but we'll see if time and energy permits.

So, it seems like you have no (well, maybe almost no) regrets about leaving the old country?

I think I might have mentioned it before, but I noticed a change in your tone of writing in your blog after you moved up here. Even in writing, you sound more relaxed and serene....

I had a great Saturday at a friend's "Becoming a Canadian" Party. Nothing like celebrating citizenship. Sadly I didn't know if I'd be able to go until the last minute, so couldn't go too nuts finding Canadian things to bring to the party, but it was a blast.

Things that made an appearance:

A mountie hat
A Team Canada Jersey
A case of "thirsty beaver" beer
A beaver tail (in lieu of the full beaver costume)
A Newfoundland citizenship ceremony, complete with screech and cod
The national anthem

No one got particularly verklempt, but just hearing my amazonian African-Canadian friend from Atlanta say "verklempt" was a hoot in and of itself...

What, no showing of Strange Brew?

When I was in the Hart House orchestra, we had an exchange to Harvard. The Harvard Canadian Club hosted a party for us, the entertainment at which consisted of Molson Canadian, chips & salsa, and Strange Brew showing on a small TV.

It was actually more fun than it sounds, because our double bass player had had a bit part in the film, as the cop who watchse the McKenzie Bros. trick sink into Toronto Harbour.

None whatsoever. I do miss people, and I miss New York City, but that's not a regret, it's just a condition. I wasn't going to live in the same place my entire life, so that part was bound to happen.

You did mention it before, and I really appreciate it. I'm glad it shows!

LOL. The party sounds great. One day we'll have one of those. For now though, just the early-summer, help-us-celebrate-our-new-lives-and-Laura's-birthday party.

Wrye, could you email me off-blog? I just sent you something, but it bounced back as undeliverable. Unless you're in hiding, do get in touch...

Are you using my shaw or my yahoo address? Shaw is fine and that would be the same one I sent you an email from way back when. Otherwise, will do when I get off work.

Ah-ha! I forgot about the Shaw address. I'm on my way...
