I am writing to urge you to call for the immediate release of Robin Long, an American Iraq war resister now being detained in a prison cell in Nelson, BC.
Yesterday was Robin's son's birthday. This Canadian-born child turned two years old while his father sat in jail, waiting for you to enact the will of Parliament.
In addition, Corey Glass, an Iraq war veteran, is scheduled to be deported tomorrow, July 10. You have neither acted nor commented on his case.
On June 3, by majority vote, the Canadian Parliament called upon the Government to implement a provision allowing Iraq War Resisters and their families to remain in Canada, and to stop all deportation proceedings against them.
A recent poll showed that nearly two out of three Canadians (64%) support this.
In light of the June 3 vote, majority public opinion, and the recent Federal Court decision regarding Joshua Key, you are compelled to act.
On April 13, 2005, in the House of Commons, you said, "The Prime Minister has the moral responsibility to respect the will of the House". Mr. Harper, as the leader of a minority Government, you must respect the will of the House.
Please act immediately to stop these deportations and to give Iraq War resisters asylum in Canada.
Sincerely,
Laura Kaminker
