dictatorship

I thought I should at least acknowledge what happened in the US while wmtc was chatting about dishwashers and snow shoveling.

As I'm sure you know, W installed John Bolton as the US ambassador to the UN over the strong objections of Senate Democrats.

Here I am complaining about the Dems' spinelessness, and when they show some gumption, W says, Fuck you, I'll do as I please.

I'm quite delighted to hear that Bolton was booed at the UN. He is, no doubt, seen as completely illegitimate and is in for a rough time.

I posted this before, but it seems appropriate to post it again:

This has got to be the stupidest idea yet from Bush Co....

Exactly how does sending an undiplomatic blowhard to the UN accomplish the goal of getting the UN to accept America's policies?

It's sort of like the kooks who tell you that you're a horrible, pond scum traitor for daring to think about moving to Canada. Then they expect that you'll change your mind because of their insults.

I dunno, it's got a lot of competition.

"Exactly how does sending an undiplomatic blowhard to the UN accomplish the goal of getting the UN to accept America's policies?"

I don't think the goal is getting the UN to accept America's policies. I think the goal is to make the UN reject America's policies, to give the US an excuse to demonize and/or marginalize the UN further.

I suspect Bolton will be treated largely like you treat the crazy guy in your neighbourhood, outwardly friendly and civil, but you don't invite him to any of your block parties.

An excellent analogy.

I have to agree with James, I don't think BushCo wants the UN to accept US policies. They must want to further antagonize the UN, or why would they send Bolton?

So often with these guys, it's a choice between, are they clueless gits or evil geniuses. I think it's best not to underestimate them.

I think maybe "clueless evil" might describe them.

As much as right-wing blowhards might want to disbelieve it, the U.S. is as dependent on the rest of the world as is the rest of the world is dependent on the U.S. It's no longer an isolated island that can blow off everyone else and not be affected.

Pissing off the rest of the world might buy a few redneck votes, but accomplishes zilch. And this is the party of so-called capitalists, so you'd think someone there would know how the market works.

There's an old saying, "Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by incompetence".

Unfortunately, it didn't take malicious incompetence into account.
