I just read your post on the reasons for your move. We moved to Toronto over a year ago from the San Francisco area from almost identical reasons and logic. On the whole it has gone well and is meeting most of our expectations. I wish you a smooth transition too!Ah, that's gold. Thank you, Pearl!

This sort of thing always surprises me. I suppose it reveals me to be a little shallow if I say I'm always a little perplexed when someone moves from a mild or warm climate to Canada (except maybe Vancouver; that'd be more like San Francisco). Someone from the Midwest or north of Baltimore is less surprising... once you get snow, in for a penny in for a pound, I figure.
Given how reputedly liberal San Francisco is, it's a telling point. There's no getting around the fact that, at this point in history, the US is a very divided body politic. It's disheartening that our side's not ascendant... for the moment, anyhow. I'm pleased that we do exist as a measure of reserve for liberality on this continent, where perhaps our values will be protected from the cold winds and spread again. Heh, Canada's forever been the keep for the United States' "lost" values till they're in fashion again. :)

Hey, Pearl and I live(d) in the most progressive areas of the US: SF and NYC. But these are increasingly islands of sanity in an insane culture.
For me it's not really just ascendancy for the moment. My problems with the US are more structural in nature. They aren't going away.
