Today is May Day, the International Workers' Day, a day to celebrate our strength and our unity as working people. Although May Day is an official holiday in many countries around the world, many working-class Americans are unaware of it. 2012 might change that.
There has been talk of a general strike, of students staying home from school and workers bringing cities to a halt. A general strike would take a very long time and a tremendous amount of organization to build. Occupy's decentralized, consensus form of governance does not lend itself to such an endeavour. So if today, May 1, 2012, does not represent a work stoppage of historic proportions, there will be no shortage of critics to sneer and, yet again, pronounce the movement dead.
No matter.
May Day 2012 is an opportunity for the Occupy movement to flex its muscles, renew its commitment, and remind both the 99% and the 1% that it hasn't - we haven't - gone away.
