un-meme

AndyM at funcentral (one of my favorite blogs) tagged me for a meme, and being the killjoy that I am, I declined. What can I say, it's a blanket policy. I just don't want to do them.

But being a very nice guy, Andy decided not to shun me for this breach of blogosphere etiquette, and asked me to pass along the meme anyway.

So what's the deal with this? If I don't write the meme, am I allowed to tag other bloggers with it? Please advise.

On a related note, wmtc has some new blog friends. Welcome to the accordion-slinging Mr Anchovy, who I found through Zydeco Fish (who is currently taking shit for a really good political post, you might want to check in). Catalytic Converter is working for the Resistance in my home town, and Brett, although he doesn't know me yet, is bringing liberal values to my alma mater, through his excellent Canadian Liberal @ Penn.

Unsure of the etiquette on that one. Just a fun little game, so my guess is it matters little if you choose to do nothing with it.

Cue the Seinfeld:
"I choose not to run!" :-D
Funniest episode ever.

That's a great one! Mine will always be the parking garage. "Those scientologists can be so touchy!" (Fits in with your Tom Cruise theme!)

When did "meme" change from Richard Dawkins's definition and start meaning "pop-culture relay game on the Internet"?

It definitely matters little. :)
I just don't want to appear rude.

When did "meme" change from Richard Dawkins's definition and start meaning "pop-culture relay game on the Internet"?

Good question. I wonder if anyone knows.

Survey Says...?

No wait, that's Richard Dawson. Never mind.

I liked him better with Hogan's Heroes. :)

I don't think it matter much.

Then again, I've never been tagged, so I cannot be sure.

The thing is, I'd likely respond to the meme, but would also likely forget to tag the next person...isn't that bad too?

Teflonjedi, you are hereby tagged. It's favorite movies. Here's G's post for the themes.

Hey, I forgot to add you to my blogroll. Will do so right now.

Hi all! Laura, you flatter me with your kind words. Thanks for all of the traffic sent my way today--there was lots!

As for the annoying "meme" ting, I resisted the big Book one that was going around a few months ago. I've clearly relaxed my stance on them now, and view them as a great way to link up the blogosphere. They're also a Godsend on slow news days, for a topic to blog about.

I was confused by the usage of meme also. Back in June, my friend Isabella wrote "Perhaps it was rhetorical, but just in case it wasn't: Richard Dawkins coined the term "meme" in The Selfish Gene — "a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation. The breakthrough in memetics is in extending Darwinian evolution to culture."
The Darwin reference is a bit daunting, considering what we do here--no?

That's a good way to look at it! I like reading other people's, I just resist doing them myself. If I didn't fuss so much over my writing - if I could just throw something up and not care how it read - I might feel differently. But then, I'm a writer...

The Darwin reference is a bit daunting, considering what we do here--no?

That's for sure! It's also potentially dangerous anytime Darwin's ideas are "extended" into another realm. Some still belief in "social Darwinism", after all.

And oh yeah, I'm amazed that I cause a rise in traffic to anyone's blog, but I'm glad to hear it. It's been very gratifying this year - meeting bloggers on the net, connecting with so many cool people. I feel really fortunate to be part of it.

Dawkin's notion of the "meme" is essentially that of a viral idea -- ideas that can spread from person to person, "reproducing". Fad, advertising, theories, religious ideas, etc, all fall under the notion to some degree or another. Religions are large, ponderous collections of memes, while a fad is a light, fast-moving (but short-lived) meme.

In this case, the "list your 10 favourite movies" thing isn't really a meme, but the "play tag with a 'list your X favourite Y' thing" is.

LG, your mister Anchovy links seem to have an extra http in them.

Thanks for the link, and I wish you great success!

I have traveled a decent amount in Canada, and love it.

If you want a daily photo from the streets of Toronto check out inconduit.com.

inconduit.com is a great site! I didn't know about it.

Yes, I am taking shit, and Art has branded me, in his blogroll, as an "Angry Canadian." I always wanted to be called angry.

laura k said...

Wrye: thanks, and fixed. :)

CC: thank you for your good wishes, and this very cool site!

ZF: oh, the irony. A man lashing out at strangers who don't share his opinions calling other people angry. You don't strike me as angry in the least. Ah well...

Heh, just doing a little end-of-year clean-up, and I don't think I ever responded back to you regarding the tagging!

I did fulfill my "duty", back in August, as you can see.

Cheers, and happy new year!

To be honest, I can't believe I tagged you at all, since I don't do memes. I did read the post, though - long ago.

Happy New Year to you, too!
