Both AP stories that I found on Common Dreams. I don't have the original links.

The really distressing thing, to me, is how easily people are getting away with things like the demonization of Sheehan. Back when Clinton was about to send troops to Bosnia, Bill "Cat Killer" Frist was berating Clinton, "You'd better be ready to explain to bereaved mothers what their sons and daughters have died for!". Now, the same people who defended that statement are yelling about how demanding exactly that explanation from the President is un-American, treasonous, even insane. You can literally be branded as out of your mind for questioning the President.

The very notion that you can brand someone "un-American" for simply stating an opinion has got to be the most "un-American" thing possible -- or would be, if the Bill of Rights were respected.

Meanwhile, that idiot who fired off his shotgun over Camp Casey is being praised by neighbours for his "courage". I guess in Texas it takes a lot of courage to discharge firearms at unarmed people.

Is it me, or have things gotten even more insane than usual down there?

I can't remember where I found this link -- maybe it was here and I'm just completing a circle -- but this is well worth reading: I Miss Republicans.

I miss Republicans too.

I assure you, it's not you.

Although branding protestors un-patriotic is as old as the US itself.

I haven't seen that link, I'll check it out tomorrow. Thanks, James. G'night.

This is only tangentially related, but you may find it interesting.

You might have seen an open letter former Canadian foreign affairs minister Lloyd Axworthy wrote to Condolezza Rice back in March. If not, you can find it at the Winnipeg Free Press. It's well worth reading.

He's just written a new op-ed for the Toronto Star, called Time to Redefine Ties with the U.S., which is also worthwhile. It opens with a discussion of the whole Devil's Lake issue that you mentioned here before, and advocates Canada leaving NAFTA to free up our international trade options (and be less at the mercy of US regulation).

I posted it when it ran. Thanks for the tip on the new essay.
