brush with fame

I hope it's ok to share this exciting news I received from ALPF. I don't see why not. After all, he is - by self-definition - anonymous:
Hey guess what?
I took a pee beside Prime Minister Paul Martin yesterday! I'm not kidding! He was very nice and I told him that it was an honour to be standing beside him, even if it was an odd circumstance. He shook my hand (after we washed them) and said it nice to meet me!!
Very cool! I've met a few famous people here and there, but never a Prime Minister, and never so up-close and personal. Certainly never while urinating!

ALPF again...

You what it is amazing and pretty cool about this bizarre situation? I live in a country where our national leader can be left alone in a public place with a complete stranger without protection being present! The RCMP officers that were outside the washroom didn't even frisk me, they just said hi!! Can you imagine the US Secret service leaving Bush alone with a total stranger that they haven't even checked over.

I thought of that, too!! It is mind-boggling, really.

It's a clear example of reaping what one sows. There's a reason US presidents are such targets, and Canadian leaders feel safe.

I hope Canada will always be able to be so trusting.

Part of what makes our country so great is that our leaders are always "normal people", if you know what I mean by that.

They are not projected as gods, demigods, rulers, dictators, kings, stars, or anyone else who people say should be held on high. They carry themselves as regular folks who just happen to have that particular job. We can identify with them - which is why within the country they are relatively safe and one can pee alongside them in perfect harmony.

Right now I'm thinking of the Seinfeld "can't spare a square episode" ... that would freakin' hilarious if that was the country's leader in the next stall asking you for a square of TP, now wouldn't it?

Also, if PM the PM wanted to, he could turn this into a Liberal election campaign moneymaker. Pay $5 to win a chance to urinate beside the country's top dog. Why not? Already have one scandal over inappropriate fundraising/advertising. Why not another? Seriously - I can see the "Pee With Paul" event being a huge success on the campaign trail - so long as someone provides him with a lot of water.

It is true. Although I have never had a face-to-face encounter with a sitting PM, I twice encountered former PMs (Trudeau and Mulroney) walking the streets in Montreal without security details while I lived there.
