An item in my ongoing effort to highlight progressive victories: last week Montana became the fifth state - joining Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, Vermont and more than 375 local governments - to officially condemn the so-called Patriot Act. According to the ACLU, the supposedly red state passed the strongest statewide resolution against the Patriot Act yet, with overwhelmingly bipartisan support. Details here, in The Nation.
You can read about national resistance to the Patriot Act in this story in the Madison, Wisconsin Capital Times. The writer calls it "the most underreported political story of recent years" and emphasizes the wide political spectrum fueling the fight.
To find out what your own neighborhood is doing to defend the Bill of Rights, visit the Bill of Rights Defense Committee. Not a great website, but a great fight.

Montana and Alaska are two red states with a strong streak of libertarianism. They love guns and hate taxes and most of all, they want the federal government to stay out of their business. It's not surprising that the Patriot Act would go over like a lead balloon in tose states.
Exactly right. That's another reason why the red and blue labels don't make any sense.
