kids on wheels update

The Kids On Wheels book, which I contributed to a great deal, is shaping up to be a huge success. (I described it here and here.) This summer will see the premiere issue of the KOW magazine. It will start out every six months; if that's successful it will go quarterly in 2006, and if that works, bimonthly in 2007.

I'm Associate Editor, which is a nice perk, name on the masthead. I'll be writing the sports & recreation "department" (i.e., page), a feature and ... fiction! I started out writing young-adult fiction (I've written two-plus novels, all unpublished), so being commissioned to write fiction for a kids' magazine is exciting for me.

The inaugural sports page will look at wheelchair-using kids doing downhill racing. It's like mountain biking on a four-wheeled ATV. You can see some photos and pioneers of the sport - with their heavy-duty chairs with big knobbly tires - here and here. The feature story will be on swimming with dolphins, and the fiction... who knows! I was incredibly flattered to be asked, but now I have to come up with something. Gulp.
