portugal joins the nations of marriage equality

The Parliament of Portugal has passed a bill calling for marriage equality! The law will make the country the sixth nation in Europe, and the eighth country overall, to legalize same-sex marriage: Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Norway, South Africa and Canada.

It is thought that the Portuguese president, Anibal Cavaco Silva, a Conservative, will not veto the bill, which was passed by the socialist government. Two years ago the Portuguese government struck down the country's ban on abortion, despite opposition from you-know-who. (Portugal is predominantly Catholic.)
