Diaz is the only US serviceman to be imprisoned for an act of insubordination aimed at the Bush administration's detention policies. He was court-martialed and convicted after he tried to help the prisoners being held - still, they are still there, without charges or trials - at Guantánamo Bay.

Diaz tried to get the names of the 551 prisoners then at Guantánamo to lawyers at the Center for Constitutional Rights. The names of the prisoners. The Bush regime had not even released a list of their names. The United States Supreme Court has upheld the prisoners' right to challenge their detention, but this government has nothing but contempt for the law and the US Constitution. It is beyond the law.

Diaz tried to do something heroic, on the order of Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers. He took a great personal risk to stand for justice, and to help other human beings. He was not successful, but he tried, and is paying a very high price for his courage.
