what i'm watching: redacted, in the valley of elah at tiff

If anyone sees the new Brian De Palma film "Redacted" at the Toronto Film Festival (or after), I'd love it if you stopped by and shared your thoughts.

As you probably know, "Redacted" is a fictionalized account of the real-life gang rape and murder of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl by US soldiers, who also murdered four of her family members. The film blew away audiences at the Venice Film Festival. Its producers, Simone Urdl and Jennifer Weiss, are both Canadian.

My interest is not purely political. A few lifetimes ago, I knew Brian De Palma and used to hang out with him on a semi-regular basis. So I'm always interested in his work, even if much of it is more violent than I can stand.

"Redacted" isn't the only Iraq-themed movie at TIFF. Canadian director Paul Haggis's "In the Valley of Elah," which was also screened at in Venice, is supposed to be great. It focuses on the lasting psychological wounds of war, and how society treats veterans.
