what i'm watching: new york, twice

We recently saw two movies that co-starred my favorite city. One was Woody Allen's Melinda and Melinda. It was sweet and funny, and if you like Woody Allen, it's a nice rental. If you don't care for his brand of romantic comedy, you won't find anything new. It's all shot in Manhattan, of course, including a gorgeous autumnal Central Park.

The other New York movie was Saving Face, a terrific romantic comedy by Alice Wu. Two women fall in love against the backdrop of the Chinese community in Flushing, in New York City. Bits of Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan make appearances; the movie has a real New York flavour. I really enjoyed it and definitely recommend it.

And what do I find on a Simpsons re-run last night? Well, what else? Lisa confesses that she cheated, and what turns out to be a fake Springfield Comptroller says: "That took courage. And where I come from - Canada - we reward courage..." As Lorna recently pointed out in comments, a few of the Simpsons writers are Canadians, but we thought this was just a random Canada line. Like, why not.

Hey, I just realised, you know a little bit about New York... so it's time for you to return a favour! :)

I'm going to NYC for Christmas. I'll be there from the 23rd to the 27th, right in Manhattan. What should I see? What should I do? Other than the obvious tourist things of course. Can you recommend some restaurants or cool stores (esp bookstores) I'd never hear of otherwise? And most important of all, what cool things are there to do on Christmas Day?

Sorry to threadjack, but it seemed topical... at the time...

M@, I love New York at Christmastime and have lots of suggestions and recommendations!

However, I have very limited time right now. I'll get some ideas together over the weekend - email me and I'll send them to you.

A couple of questions to help me. Have you been to NYC before? Where are you staying? What kinds of things do you like to do (besides bookstores)?

Btw, there's no such thing as threadjacking here - post what you like, when you like. :)

While I think of things, you might want to read my Christmas post from last year, as well as various "leaving New York" posts. To save time, I'll just post URLs without making links:
