question

Tuesday is my birthday. We have tickets to the next play in our Soulpepper subscription, Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing (which I've seen before and like a lot).

I'd like to go out to dinner beforehand, but not in the Distillery District where the theatre is. Some place we haven't tried yet (easily done), where we can have a nice early dinner and get to the play comfortably by 8:00. Doesn't have to be very high-end, but not some place extremely casual like a pub or Chinatown. We like all kinds of food, but especially love bistros or casual French dining.

Recommendations?

  3. If you're looking for a basic French bistro, La Paradis is pretty good. There's a review here. It's kind of close to Davenport and Avenue Road, so if you go there you'll need to leave plenty of time (fifteen or twenty minutes if you're driving) to get from dinner to the Distillery.

    Happy birthday!

  4. my recommendation is even further west, so it might not be appropriate for dinner before soul pepper....but you may wish to try this another time. There is an inconspicuous little restaurant on Lansdowne just south of St. Clair called The Big Ragu with excellent food and very friendly service. Mid-priced. Best make a reservation if you go.

  6. I'll say Happy Birthday now since long term memory is not one of my strong points.

    Enjoy your night out.

  7. Thanks for the birthday wishes! And thanks for the dinner recommendations. Both sound like places we'd like to try, although perhaps too far away for a comfortable pre-theatre meal. I'll put them on The List.

  8. Happy Birthday! Jamie Kennedy Wine Bar and Restaurant are great and not too far- at Church and Front. Here's a link: www.jkkitchens.com.

If you end up going there, consider it a small birthday gift from me!

  9. Ah-ha! Now that sounds like a workable pre-theatre idea. Thanks Genet!

You'll be there to buy us a round, will you? ;-)

  10. A second recommendation here for Jamie Kennedy's place.

I've been there more than once when forced to stay so close to not even close to being anything remotely near ground zero (ie. downtown TO, a stone's throw from the CBC) on business.
