Woman faces jail over border swimThe story is here, though I've copied the entire text. Thanks to Alan With One L for the news and link.
A woman barred from entering the US has been arrested after allegedly swimming over the border from Canada.
Katharine Hiscox, 33, from Shepton Mallet, Somerset, is charged with entering the US without inspection and being in the country after deportation.
If convicted, she faces up to two years in prison and a fine of up to £140,000.
Ms Hiscox allegedly swam across the St. John River from Canada and was discovered in Maine on Saturday, according to court documents.
Various visas
She was driven to a hotel and the police were called. Border agents found her at a petrol station on Sunday.
Ms Hiscox's lawyer, Charles Hodsdon, said she had been to the US three times on various visas.
She was deported from Atlanta in January and barred from re-entering the US.
"I am still trying to figure out why exactly she was turned away on that occasion," Mr Hodsdon said.
A detention hearing is scheduled at a court in Bangor, Maine for Thursday.

trust me, it's not worth it
While wingnuts are asking why anyone in their right mind would leave the greatestcountryonthefaceoftheearth, others are risking their lives swimming across rivers to get here. Mexicans braving the Rio Grande? Nope. A British woman swimming the St. John.

ReplyDelete1. Allan just booked the movers. Most of our stuff will move to Canada on Friday, August 26.
Is that the day the furniture arrives, or when it leaves? Hopefully it won't get caught up in customs.
Maybe she was trying to get to Boston for the start of the Rolling Stones tour... Little did she know that the Stones are performing a surprise concert at the Phoenix here in Toronto tonight for $10 a seat! All sold out now, of course. They announced the show yesterday morning, and people lined up for 23 hours for tix.
ReplyDeleteShe sure picked a quiet place to cross the border. There's very little in that part of New Brunswick and Maine.
ReplyDeleteKyle: Our stuff leaves NYC on Friday, Aug 26. We leave Tues, Aug 30. Our stuff arrives sometime after that.
ReplyDeleteI'm not worried about customs. It will all get in eventually.

Very cool! I know the Stones love Canada, always rehearse, etc. there. Since NYC is their home in the US, I love the idea that they are also at home in Toronto.
Allan used to work in the same building as Jane Rose, Keith's long-time manager, and once saw Keith on the elevator. Now that's what I call a celebrity sighting.
She sure picked a quiet place to cross the border.
ReplyDeleteI assume that was the idea.

ReplyDeleteOr, at least, Margaret Trudeau. ;)

ReplyDelete"I bet you think you're the only woman in To-ron-to..."
That is one of my all-time Stones faves - the El Mocambo side of Love You Live.
Stones, eh? Check THIS out.

ReplyDeleteApparently they spend a lot of time in TO. I'm told that they do all their pre-tour rehearsing here (which is why they are here this week -- they've been warming up for the tour at Greenwood College School).
