time to bombard ignatieff with pro-coalition messages

By now you've all heard that Bob Rae has dropped out of the Liberal leadership contest. This is a big disappointment to me, but we can't waste time on disappointment.

It would hurt to see the left cut a deal with a pro-war, pro-torture apologist for U.S. foreign policy...

Geez. Just read that over. Kind of leaves a hollow pit in your stomach, doesn't it?

...but if Ignatieff represents the Liberal platform, and the coalition accord is specific to economic issues, I can live with it. I have to live with it to get rid of the Conservatives, and I have to count on the NDP to stay who they are.

That may be a lot to hope for, but I've got plenty of hope.

Write, call and email the offices of Michael Ignatieff. Tell him we want a Liberal-NDP coalition!

Also: if you have a Liberal or NDP MP, email and call them, too.

Tell them we are the majority and we believe the coalition is best for us, and best for Canada!

Here is a sample letter to Ignatieff on the war resisters issue.

Greetings Member of Parliament Michael Ignatieff:

On June 3, a majority vote in Parliament recommended that Canada’s government implement a program to allow conscientious objectors (“to a war not sanctioned by the United Nations”) to remain in Canada.

The public records show that you personally voted in favour of this program.

I urge you to implement this program as soon as it is in your power to do so. Thank you.

That implementation will reassure Canadians that respect for majority votes in Parliament is now restored after the dark period of Harper’s disrespect for Parliament.

Sincerely,
your name

I was not aware Ignatieff was all that. Would you happen to have a link?

Ignatieff DOES NOT support torture. You might want to read something he's written on the topic, rather than the cut-and-paste selective quotes you can find online, or if that's too much, read this article or this one.

Joanne: As I mentioned in a previous thread, I read articles by Michael Ignatieff in the New York Times for many years, before I even knew he was Canadian, before I ever dreamed I'd be Canadian myself one day. He is most definitely an apologist for pre-emptive invasions and for torture.

The selective cut-and-paste quotes are for the sake of time and brevity. I don't appreciate whole articles being posted in comments. However, I've read many articles by him in their entirety.

Christian: see links in earlier threads.

Thanks Boyd!

Joanne, you posted two links by other people defending Michael Ignatieff. On the other hand, I've read what he's actually written, himself. I'm going to take the man at his word.

Christian, no need to continue posting the same comment, it's up and I've responded.

Some links are in comments in this thread. However, I have read many articles by Mr Ignatieff that are not online. He is most certainly an apologist for torture, pre-emptive invasions and other disgusting US foreign policy.

Seems Joanne's tactic is another example of "if I repeat something enough, maybe everyone will believe it".

I posted a pro-torture Ignatieff link yesterday -- and as I always do, I linked to the entire article that HE wrote.

Selective, my ass.

Joanne who has no link or profile and likely won't come back to defend her snarky comment.

Thanks for reminding me to get my letters off to Iggy and our local Liberal MP.

Hope it works to get rid of the current holder of the Prime Minister's office . . . .

Try "Getting Iraq Wrong" and Mr. Ignatieff's own If torture works....

The last article offers clarity where Ignatieff stands: he favours "coercive interrogation" (codename for torture) over torture. Are you still with me?

This guy is a neocon backing neocon. Bye, Bye coalition? I'm afraid so.
