platitudes

Five things I wish I would never hear again:

1. Everything happens for a reason.

2. God doesn't give you more than you can bear.

3. Everything always works out for the best.

4. It was meant to be. (Only applied to events that make us happy.)

5. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

To all of the above, I reply: WHO SAYS? and HOW THE FUCK DO YOU KNOW?

Actually, everything does happen for a reason, until you get to the quantum level where causality oftens breaks down or becomes undefinable. I know that's not what people mean when they say that, but I like to mess with their heads.

Right! It happens for a reason in the sense of one thing leading to another. What people mean, however, is another story. And it drives me insane...!

I guess we can count ourselves lucky that that tooth-grinding one about "if we don't [insert questionable activity here], the terrorists win" seems to have died a quiet death.

Of course, it seems to have been superseded by the equation of each and every form of dissent with terrorism, and each and every dissenter with terrorists.

Maybe we should pray for the return of the "the terrorists win" attitude.

Thank goodness! I guess that happened for a reason, too. :)

I hate that Panglossian shit. Grrr!

L-girl, number one is my all-time "favorite." When people say that, I wonder if the parents who've just lost a kid to cancer see it that way. Or the Iraqis. Well, I guess we know the reasons for that. Oil, greed, power...

I have a post that's been swirling around in my head for a while - platitudes with attitude.

Me too!! It sets my teeth on edge just thinking of it. Does it ever occur to these people that nothing happens for any reason???
