we like lists: list # 15: such stuff as dreams are made on

In a dream, you walk into a room, someplace you have been before. Three people are there: a current celebrity, a historical figure, and someone you associate with your childhood. You ask for something to eat and something to drink. Music is playing in the background.

Tell us:

1. What is the room?

2. Who is the celebrity?

3. Who is the historical figure?

4. Who is the person or character you associate with your childhood?

5. What are you eating?

6. What are you drinking?

7. What music is playing?

There's no trick to this. It's a dream; it doesn't have to make sense.

I'm going to withhold my list until later in the thread.

I really tried not to second-guess myself but instead to put down the first thought that came to mind.

1. Foggy battlements of Elsinore, at the start of the play (No mystery to this one: when I am in a hypnagogic state using an induction to put myself over the threshold into sleep, this seems to be my usual starting point.)

2. Mick Jagger

3. Bertrand Russell (also no mystery: reading his autobiography right now)

4. Albert Payson Terhune

5. Mash and peas (not much mystery about this one as I've been finishing up the peas and starting the new potatoes over the past week or so)

6. My usual tipple. Beer. Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, and straight from the tap for preference

7. I can't quite hear it. Something very soft. Violins? I pretty much try to avoid listening to music. Makes me too emotionally labile.

Thanks, John! I can always count on you for an interesting list and at least one word that sends me to a dictionary.

I'd also be interested in Bertrand Russell's autobiography.

Ooh fun.

The room is my fort house that my father made for sleepovers in the backyard.

Meryl Streep is there teaching me how to act. Shakespeare is there bickering with her over her caveats. Dr. George Fishbeck is there too, the famed SoCal weatherman that I watched daily during childhood. He feels out of place but can explain anything meteorological. We're eating guacamole and drinking margaritas. The Girl from Ipanema is drifting through the air.....

OK, just free association, not forced or trying to be clever...

The living room in my family's first home when I was a child, with my father (from my childhood), Abraham Lincoln, and Captain Kangaroo. I am eating french toast and chocolate milk. Music: Some children's music album.

So, Dr. Freud, what do you think?

Amy said...

Just realized you asked for a CURRENT celebrity. Too bad...my head went right back to childhood.

I think the word "childhood" in the post just led me right back to being 5 years old!

So Captain Kangaroo was current when I was five. :)

laura k said...

Thanks, Tornwordo. The weatherman, how funny. :)

Amy, I also thought of (but didn't go with) Captain Kangaroo, but as the childhood association, not the current celeb. :)

OK, I didn't wait too long, but at least I didn't start it off this time.

1. I'm in my childhood bedroom, the room I shared with my sister until age 10 (when my brother went away to school and my sister got his room). Almost all my dreams take place here.

2. Joni Mitchell is there, which may seem like a historical figure to some, but she's the celebrity.

3. Joni and I are both thrilled because Amelia Earhart is telling us about an adventure she had.

4. Lucille Ball, as Lucy Ricardo, is trying to get in Ricky's show "down at the club".

5. We are eating my mother's mushroom and barley soup, which has been on my mind lately.

6. We're drinking milk, the only thing we ever drank.

7. Joni is singing from "The Last Waltz". No regrets, Coyote...

Music: Some children's music album.

What does this mean? More specific, please!

Amy said...

I am not sure. Could be Pete Seeger's album of children's songs, which was my childhood favorite, or one that my kids listened to like Baby Beluga or Raffi. Specific enough?

This made me realize that I never have food or music present in my dreams! The only time in my life food has ever come up is when I was having GERD-induced nightmares, and music only ever comes up in a variation on the "forgot to go to class" dream, where I've been forgetting to go to brand practice and we have a performance coming up. Which is weird, because food and music are positive things for me and my dreams are mostly positive.

I very rarely have specific people or specific location either. I'm most often navigating some fictional universe people by one-dimensional interchangeable stock characters. My dreams need a better screenwriter.

Tell us:

1. What is the room?

The showroom in a car dealership.

2. Who is the celebrity?

Robert Wagner, if not a current celebrity, a celebrity currently hawking "reverse mortgages" on the low-rent TV channels.

3. Who is the historical figure?

Jacob, of Book of Genesis fame

4. Who is the person or character you associate with your childhood?

Ms. D., first grade teacher

5. What are you eating?

My own fingers.

6. What are you drinking?

shampoo

7. What music is playing?

Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young and Rubicam.
No, Brooks, Dunn and Bradstreet.

Amy, yes, specific enough, thank you for filling that in. :)

Imp Strump, I never see food in my dreams either, and I doubt I hear music, either. This is a fictional dream.

Lorraine, I am scared by you eating your fingers - especially after the last book I read.

Is this supposed to be what I'd want the most, or what's likely to happen based on past dreams I've had?

laura k said...

Jere, it can be either of those, or any other possibility. First thing that comes to mind, or a dream you'd like, or a nightmare you've had, or... your choice.

My answers are things I've actually dreamed recently. Kind of embarrassing, but it was easier than making up things.

1. What is the room?
A bland, somewhat dingy room in one of those 1960s public recreation centers that you used to find in US suburbs, one story, with a low, flat roof, linoleum or concrete floors, and fluorescent tube lighting. Or a similar room in a similar building but located in one of the church retreat camps we used to go to as children, the kind where the bathrooms were always crawling with daddy long-legs and mosquito hawks. For some reason, such places are frequent settings for my dreams.

2. Who is the celebrity?
Historian Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz. She was in my dreams just this week.

3. Who is the historical figure?
Maya art specialist, Linda Schele, “historical” only because she died in 1998

4. Who is the person or character you associate with your childhood?
A childhood neighbor and sometime best friend named Mike. He still occasionally appears in my dreams even though I haven't been friends with him since childhood.

5. What are you eating?
A Japanese or Thai-ish, white, coconut-based soup with chunks of a mealy cheese in it, orange root vegetable chunks, and dark strips of nori.

6. What are you drinking?
Relatively clear, cool water but with rusting nails, screws, and paper clips in it. Actually happened in a dream recently. I stopped drinking it when I realized what was in it.

7. What music is playing?
Seals and Croft’s 1973 “Diamond Girl” but with 80s lyrics of the kind found in Peter Gabriel’s “Big Time” or Timbuk3’s “The Future’s So Bright…”, the kind that mocked 80s yuppies. Dreamed such a thing just last night.

Wow deang, thanks for sharing that.

1. The room is a little one room cabin in Clare County, Nova Scotia
2. The celebrity is Hyori, a popular South Korean singer and dancer (my wife and I both like her - my wife gets to be in this dream also, by the way)
3. Historical figure: Rilke
4. My Nova Scotian grandmother
5. Stuffed green-peppers, Bessarabian style.
6. Beer
7. The Einheitsfrontlied (Song of the United Front - just because it is going through my head right now)

laura k said...

A multicultural dream. Thanks. :)

1. The room is the old Astrodome in Houston, Texas.

2. The celebrity is His-Bobness (Bob Dylan).

3. The historical figure is Joan of Arc

4. The person or character I associate with my childhood is Lucas McCain (played by Chuck Connors) on the old Rifleman TV series.

5. I am eating the spaghetti I had at an Italian restarurant in Toronto when I was a kid. Amazingly good!)

6. I am drinking espresso

7. The music playing is the Rolling Stones song, Brown Sugar.

Nice! Thanks, NC. (Formerly New Nova Scotian, I believe?)

Still missing some regular listers...
