must-share video: dog rescue in japan

My heart goes out to the amazing Japanese rescue people who went to such lengths to save a dog's life.
The Japanese coast guard today rescued a dog washed out to sea with a house by the tsunami from the March 11 earthquake, Reuters reports.

A coast guard helicopter was investigating an island of debris off Kesennuma, in northern Japan, when the dog was spotted on a house roof. Frightened by the rotors, the animal disappeared inside, evading efforts to save him. A boat was sent after the helicopter ran low on fuel, and rescuers were able to catch the dog, who was described as "emaciated but alive."
The video won't embed, but you can watch it here, after 27 seconds of product pitch.

Wonderful update! The dog has been reunited with its owner!

This video has gone viral, so I have seen links to it in a few places. It is heart-breaking and heart-warming.

I was amazed at how healthy the dog looked after being stranded for weeks like that. What was she eating? Drinking? It is remarkable how resilient living creatures can be in the worst of circumstances.

I've learned that you never know who has seen what. Even with stories and videos that I think "everyone" has seen, if I post something, someone will always say they hadn't seen it before. So anything I like goes up.

I also wondered about the dog's water source. A creature can live a very long time without food but not water. She must have had some source of fresh (as opposed to salt) water somewhere. If only they could tell us.

The dog went back in the house, which you would think was all under water, when it was scared, but some part of it must have been dry to some extent. Maybe there was food there.

Can anyone tell what those black and orange and yellow balls/circles/spheres floating around in the debris around the roof were?

I have been wondering, too. They remind me of the eggs of silicon-based life. (I love that episode.)

Ah-ha! David hadn't seen it yet! My day is complete. :)

Also, Imp Strump, I now think those balls are flotation devices. If you click through to the link in my previous comment, it looks that way. What do you think?

I agree, they do look like fishing floats - which would make sense, there are a lot of those in Japanese coastal towns, and they're designed to stay afloat.

It's been a draining few weeks. Any good news at all is wonderful.
