bill c-440 second reading debate today!

Today at 11:00, the House of Commons will have a second hour of debate on Bill C-440, the private member's bill that would allow US Iraq War resisters to apply for permanent residence in Canada. If you don't get CPAC on TV, you can watch it online here.

The second-reading vote is scheduled for Wednesday, September 29 at 5:45 p.m.

Canadian readers, I hope you've all called your opposition MPs. If you haven't yet, it's not too late: call today.

I don't know if anyone's around, but if you want to gamethread the debate, I'm on it.

Lies from Rick Dykstra: bill would force CIC to accept criminals as permanent residents - no background checks allowed. LIE.

L-girl said...

Dykstra lies: automatic stays of removal with no oversight. LIE

L-girl said...

Dykstra lies: Canadian soldiers punished for desertion but US deserters welcomed.

LIE

Canadians are allowed - required - to refuse to commit war crimes.

Stephanie said...

Every deserter?? From every country??

L-girl said...

"Even though it is popular among the rabble" - rabble, that would be PEOPLE, VOTERS, Dykstra!

He says bill implies the US military policy is unjust! Oh, the horror!

L-girl said...

Dykstra, you lying piece of shit, sit yourself down.

L-girl said...

Yay, here's Libby Davies!

L-girl said...

No, only deserters opposed to a war not sanctioned by the United Nations!

L-girl said...

Davies points out "the rabble" is the majority of Canadians!

L-girl said...

Libby Davies: there is a chance for amendments, don't kill the bill.

Davies talking about Rodney Watson now.

L-girl said...

Davies: historical context - Vietnam war resisters now part of Canadian society, and Cda better for it.

L-girl said...

Yay, Davies thanks Sarah Bjorknas and Rev Ric Matthews!

L-girl said...

Davies: 2 motions already passed by strong majority - WRs pose no threat - deal with any issues in committee.

L-girl said...

Borys: we don't have to share everything with the US - United Empire Loyalists - Underground Railroad - Vietnam resisters - this is a Cdn tradition, part of our history.

L-girl said...

Borys: Cdn PMs have disagreed with US policy before, cannot bring democracy to nations at the barrel of a gun.

L-girl said...

Borys eloquent on US wars based on lies.

L-girl said...

Borys: war for oil. 100,000 dead Iraqi civilians and Iraq oil controlled by US oil interests.

L-girl said...

Borys: shout out for Kim Rivera!!!

L-girl said...

Borys: under US military "justice," murderers of Iraqi civilians get 7 months, Robin Long refused to kill, gets 15 months.

Borys: respect will of Parliament and the people! "Cease standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Bush doctrine of militarism" - stand with people of conscience instead.

Baird tables economic action plan. Nothing to say, boys???

L-girl said...

Who is this piece of shit Den DelMastro? He could grease his car with his hair.

L-girl said...

DelMastro: bill undermines Cdn military.

LIE

L-girl said...

Yeah DelMastro, we can't condemn anything from our allies, can we? Have to toe the line of US & Israel.

Mike said...

I'm watching online, given the size of the screen, Den DelMastro hair looks kind of like a weird helmet.

L-girl said...

Helmet hair is what the Cons are all about. Fisher-Price hair.

L-girl said...

Cons should stop saying the word "amendment" - since that always happens in Committee.

Mike said...

oh no, we could be overloaded by thoughtful concientious war resistors from around the world... why peace could break out all over Canada!

L-girl said...

DelMastro defending the US. Cute.

L-girl said...

oh no, we could be overloaded by thoughtful concientious war resistors from around the world... why peace could break out all over Canada!

We're only just beginning to rebuild after being destroyed by all the Vietnam resisters!

Mike said...

Governments punishing they're own people? Pot meet Kettle play nice
.

L-girl said...

DelMastro takes offense at the implication that the US invasion of Iraq was for oil.

L-girl said...

UN should not be our "moral compass" acc'ing to Cons.

L-girl said...

Irene Mattiesssen, one of our heroes!

Stephanie said...

Yeah, Irene!

L-girl said...

(And I've probably spelled her name wrong, sorry Irene.)

Irene: two motions already passed, but govt ignored it.

Stephanie said...

The last 3 minutes was improve crap!!

L-girl said...

I love when MPs say "Iraqi war resisters" as if they're Iraqis.

L-girl said...

Yes, total improv crap, he lost it.

L-girl said...

Irene: War resisters work, volunteer, are good for the community. Now telling the story of Josh Randall!

L-girl said...

Irene telling the horrible story that Josh Randall witnessed in a house raid - trained as a medic but told not to save the life of a little girl.

L-girl said...

Irene: the point is that people came here on conscience and should be allowed to stay. Now reading from Josh's own words.

L-girl said...

Here comes Gerard!

Stephanie said...

Confused indeed!

L-girl said...

GK: Cons only respond in voice of govt, not about concepts of bill - affirm Nuremberg Principles, UN Declaration of Human Rights - affirm soldier's rights. Bill reflects Cdn sensibilities.

L-girl said...

GK: Chuck Wiley have more guts than anyone in this House!! His conscience demands we debate this bill on its merits, not just toe party line.

L-girl said...

Mentions Chuck was 3 years away from his pension, but walked away b/c of conscience.

Cons put forth no amendments, no substance, just repeating lies. Cdn ppl deserve better - why not debate bill on its merits?

Hinzman decision of Fdl Crt of Appeals!

L-girl said...

GK: this is a character test, and the Conservatives FAIL!

L-girl said...

Kennedy was excellent: why can't Cons debate the issues, what are they afraid of?

Stephanie said...

Laura, for future reference only:

irene mathyssen

Mike said...

I guess the Cons can't really debate it becuase they've got nothing to debate with, just lies and innuendo.

L-girl said...

Thanks, Steph :) Now that I see it, I remember.

Mike, right you are!

I have to turn comment mod back on, walk Tala and get ready for class!

I just phoned Hedy Fry, and e-mailed her as well (since I assume she is Ottawa, not Vancouver) asking her to vote with those Dykstra calls "the rabble" and who the rest of us call the majority of Canadian citizens, and stand up for basic human rights. It should be good for the second reading, anyway.

L-girl said...

Nitangae, thank you much for that! As it happens, Hedy Fry was on my lobbying list (campaigners split up all the opposition MPs and have been phoning all day). Her office said she planned to vote in favour of the bill.

That "rabble" comment... how maddening, and how telling!
