We lost a giant of music today. The incomparable Les Paul died today at age 94.
To me Les Paul was not just an innovator and a great musician; he was a fixture in the New York City music scene throughout my life there. In the early 1980s, Paul started a weekly gig at the club Fat Tuesday's. He played there until the club closed in the mid-90s, then moved his weekly residence to another club, Iridium. He only stopped playing there a few months ago.
New York Times obituary by the man I used to call my second-favourite* music writer, Jon Pareles. Worth a read.
* Allan was writing about music at the time.
