media release from family of george tiller; list of victims

Media statement from the family of the late Dr George Tiller, assassinated this morning in Kansas. The statement was issued through his lawyers, at the request of his widow, Jeanne Tiller and the Tiller's four children and ten grandchildren.
Today we mourn the loss of our husband, father and grandfather. Today's event is an unspeakable tragedy for all of us and for George's friends and patients. This is particularly heart wrenching because George was shot down in his house of worship, a place of peace.

We would like to express the family's thanks for the many messages of sympathy from our friends and from all across the nation. We also want to thank the law enforcement officers who are investigating this crime.

Our loss is also a loss for the City of Wichita and women across America. George dedicated his life to providing women with high-quality heath care despite frequent threats and violence. We ask that he be remembered as a good husband, father and grandfather and a dedicated servant on behalf of the rights of women everywhere.

Dr. Tiller was the 4th abortion provider, and the 8th person overall, murdered by anti-choice terrorists in the US since 1993. The victims:
Dr. David Gunn
Dr. John Britton
James Barrett, clinic escort
Shannon Lowney, clinic receptionist
Lee Ann Nichols, clinic receptionist
Robert Sanderson, off-duty police officer working as a security guard
Dr. Barnett Slepian
Dr. George Tiller

Thanks for the reminder. Abortion criminalizers such as the loathsome Operation Rescue would probably consider the murdered clinic staff that their hateful propaganda also caused to be killed, "collateral damage".

There are reports that websites like OR's have been scrubbed of any text that could be perceived as incitement to commit illegal acts of violence.

I've heard it compared to killing Hitler, Pol Pot or other genocidal dictators.

They're insane.

Oh yeah, that makes sense. I think it was Dr Slepian's murderer who went to a website listing abortion providers, then after that killing, Slepian's name was crossed off. I may be getting the details a bit wrong.

The co-founders of the Haven Coalition were also listed on a site like that, with their pictures.

I'd hate to be black & white about this but I can't get over this fact: They are shooting at us.

Nigel, I agree. I see the world that way too.

I will never understand how anyone who claims to be pro-life can justify murder. At a church, no less.

These are the times that make me truly wonder about human nature.

And also about a country that still allows almost anyone who wants one to buy a gun.

So tragic, on so many levels.

Because the expression "pro life" is the most successful piece of propaganda our society has ever seen. There is and never was anything pro life about those people.

No right-thinking person should ever use that expression to mean anti-abortion-rights.

Isn't it just outrageous that anyone could even begin to believe that what Dr. Tiller and his patients do in the privacy of a medical office are any of their business? That this doctor was a national figure is tragic in itself. Can you imagine driving by a medical office of any kind ( podiatrist, peditrician, abortion provider, opthomalagist and on and on ) and thinking that what was going on in there is anyone's concern but doctor and his/her patient?

I was using "pro-life" ironically (should have been in quotes in my original post). I never do use that term to refer to the anti-choice, anti-abortion movement.

Amy, I understood that. I meant the comment more generally, not directed at you.

Jake, yes, it is fucking outrageous. Well said re other medical procedures.
