facts for the "something awful" people

To the people coming here from "Something Awful" forums:

The person who linked to this blog says:
A McCain victory would be a test of the left's continual threats to leave the U.S. upon his election. There were many similar threats made in 2004, and I only know one person who more or less followed through.

1. I did not "threaten" to move to Canada in 2004. My application was filed in 2003. I was leaving no matter who won the so-called election.

2. 11,000 Americans moved to Canada in 2006, a 30-year high.

3. This blog alone links to dozens of people who made the same move. They blog and comment on this blog all the time.

The poster who says "I only know one person" is either grossly underinformed or lying. Try gathering a few facts before making statements about "the left's continual threats".

In addition, many people do want to leave the US but cannot, because they can't afford to emigrate, or don't meet the educational and employment standards for Canada and other countries. Don't assume that (a) an exodus isn't taking place, just because you haven't seen it (how would you?) and (b) everyone else is staying put by choice.

Count us as part of the "dozens."

Give 'em hell, L-Girl . . . . :)

c) The weather here in Southern California just a couple of miles from the beach is too good :).

Not just talking about people here. Dogs love it here too.

Are there even people who are saying they'd move to Canada if McCain is elected who didn't say that for Bush? McCain doesn't strike me as more likely to trigger that sentiment than Bush.

There are definitely people saying they will move if McCain gets in.

They may or may not have said it before, but they feel if it's more of the same, they have to get out.

I also know of many people who started the process during Bush's 2nd term and are still saving money and working through the process.

What I meant is I don't know if they said it before or not.

Still in the US tho, right?

Well, some may argue that it's in Mexico :)

If so, they'll still be there for at least half of his first term. Suckers!

The "Something awful people" are called Goons. And they have that name for good reason*.

*Spend the $10 to get a membership to the forums, but don't post anything. Just read and take it all in. This humanity on the Internet. Be scared. Be very, very scared.

No thanks. I've seen enough internet scariness, and all of it free. No need to spend $10 to see more.

I'm on records as having NOT moved here for political reasons, but let me go on the record now and say that I won't ever got back voluntarily, and that includes lovely, sunny California. Okay, now that I just thought about Monterey & Lake Tahoe and some other places I've been, I might be persuaded to go visit, but I'll never live in the USA ever again.

Good for you, FatLady. I visit frequently, and will continue to as long as I can. But lots of places are nice to visit. That doesn't mean you want to live there.

There's something awfully suspicious about people who have to pull out all the stops to convince themselves that:
(a) no one is emigrating from their country
(b) no one wants to emigrate from their country
(c) there are no reasons for anyone to want to leave
(d) people who leave deserve to be called names
