what one community did to support u.s. war resisters in canada

Many of the Toronto-area war resisters live in Parkdale, where they enjoy strong support from their neighbours, including their MP, Peggy Nash. Earlier this month, local residents held an event to show that support, to speak out on behalf of their war resister friends and neighbours, and to urge Canada to Let Them Stay. I was unable to attend, so I was very happy to receive this video.

Did you ever wonder why the War Resisters Support Campaign has so many great videos? We are incredibly fortunate that one of our core Campaigners is the talented activist filmmaker Alex Lisman.

Alex films every Campaign event and produces huge numbers of special projects (like Corey Glass' appeal to Stephen Harper). He also made the Campaign's outreach and promotional film, Let Them Stay, among other films.

I can't imagine how the Campaign would have gotten this far without Alex's filmmaking talent and unflagging hard work, along with his ideas and organizing skills.

You can see a whole slew of Alex Lisman videos here on the War Resister Support Campaign YouTube channel.

Yes, awesome video -- kudos to Alex.

Particularly impressive is that all levels of elected representatives in this area support resisters: federal, provincial, municipal and the local neighbourhood residents' association. Now that's solidarity!

And for your Unitedstatesian readers: "M.P." (as in Peggy Nash) is "Member of Parliament". This term always reminds me of my first ever trip ever to NYC, for a huge disarmament rally at the UN c. 1980 (hey, maybe we met then but didn't know it yet? there were a few other people around...): when we mentioned to the person we were staying with that we knew some MPs who were very supportive of the peace movement, she stared in disbelief because she couldn't imagine any Military Police being openly pro-disarmament (and she was actually a transplanted Canadian who had been Stateside so long she had forgotten what an M.P. was).

You'd have to be brand-new to this blog not to know that! (Not to mention somewhat of a cave dweller?) But you never know.

Was it 1982, by any chance? June 12, 1982 - massive anti-nuke rally. I came up from Philadelphia for it.

Yep, that sounds like about the right date (don't actually have a calendar from back then to check).

And yes, I realised while writing that most of your readers would know what an MP is, but I couldn't resist the contrastive anecdote...

Ah, the old "couldn't resist" disguised as information. :)

I only remember the date because I helped organize buses for it - the first time I had ever done something like that - and we called it the "June 12 rally". It was the day before my 21st birthday.

Yep, I checked some of the War Resisters support campaign on youtube out, including the one with Peggy Nash and the one with the interviews with Jeff House and Joshua Key on Democracy Now about the recent court decision, and they were just cool again!!! The movies are definitely an important asset and also always very interesting to watch. Thanks and so well done, Alex!!!
