My favourite mug, home to my morning caffeine fix since 1996, is on the disabled list with a career-ending injury. The mug was my favourite souvenir from when I covered the 1996 Paralympics in Atlanta. When I discovered the hairline crack, I retired it to decorative status.
Who will replace the trusty Paralympic mug? I've been using a bland Ikea replacement until a suitable player could be signed.
Prime Minister of Red Sox Nation to the rescue. While scurrying around New York City last week, Allan bought this for me.
If you are lucky enough to have visited New York before the Starbucks Era, you will recognize the ubiquitous coffee shop mug. Most of the zillions of coffee shops (i.e., diners) in New York City are owned by Greeks, hence the design.
Allan once bought me a t-shirt with this same design, but it died many years ago. This is even better: a daily reminder of my hometown. The mug doesn't have a handle, but it's made of thick ceramic, so the outside doesn't get too hot.
The box says the We Are Happy To Serve You mug is a "classy, useful New York souvenir," and reminds you that "the future is green" (box made from recycled paper). More at We Are Happy To Serve You.

Ah the coffee mug!
I have a Rosie The Rivetter since she is sacred to me, an AA mug I got free for doing an Al-Anon talk and the WDET mug I got for donating in 2000 to our local NPR station.
Every time I drink lovely hot coffee from it I remember how that was the last time I plegded to either of our NPR stations that I listen to exclusively and that if there's a Liberal Hell that's probably where I'll end up.
I, myself have a set of 4 of these mugs, and they are the best thing evah.
I showed it to my cousin, once, and she shrugged, thinking, "what's the big deal?" It wasn't until she touched it that she realized it was a ceramic coffee mug, not just another one of the ubiquitous paper cups, and she was pretty shocked at how realistic it looked.

Ah, to me as well! I have a wonderful framed Rosie poster: Joan Of Arc saved France, women of America, save your country!
Nige my friend, I seriously doubt you are going to any kind of hell.

Cool! They do look completely realistic. I love the rolled top.
Great-aunt Betty, who we visit in Vermont, has a coffee mug from every place she's been, and she's traveled all over the world. One from each place, so they make one huge set.
It made me wish I had started a collection like that long ago. Not necessarily mugs, but something, one thing, from each place.
We're more into buying handcrafted work than a mass-produced souvenir with a place name - but Betty's collection is impressive and fun.
Wow, even I recognize that coffee cup. I remember getting a cup of coffee one morning years ago from a small coffee shop in the Upper West Side, near Union Theological Seminary--that is, near Columbia University, for all the non-seminary people. For some reason, that design stuck in my memory.
I'll remain otherwise silent on my own personal coffee cup collection :)
omg! I was looking at the same mug at the MoMA online store today!!! So cool! (Hey L, any idea as to when the BBQ will be next Summer?) bye
I love those cups! How fun!
My favourite mug comes from the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. It's all black, and in white text, it simply says, "Fear No Art".
Perfect.

Some time in June, I believe.

Yes, early June, I think.
I'd like to not conflict with either Canada Day or Pride Week. Last time I couldn't do that because of a big writing deadline. This time I'm thinking early to mid June. As soon as we pick a date, I'll let you know!

UWS = coffee shop heaven. All my faves are there.
Nice to see you here, Peregrinato. I'm glad this post evoked some memories for you!
Okay, thanks Redsock and L.
That is an awesome coffee cup. I'll be picking some up next time I'm down there (which will hopefully be soonish).
I wonder if Tim Horton's will ever consider doing this for their retro coffee cups. I think it would be a big seller. (Anyone else remember the TH donut boxes that looked like the donut stores? It wasn't that long ago...)
