brooke astor

One of the best-known and well-loved New Yorkers has died. Brooke Astor, a remarkable woman, died yesterday at the remarkable age of 105.

I don't have time to write anything about her this morning. I'll just link to her obituary in the New York Times. (There's a really nice picture on this obit, from an earlier edition.)

Ah, Brooke Astor. Where would New York have been without her.

Not the only NY icon to die today. Phil Rizzuto also.

Oh my god. Thanks, Jere. That news wasn't up yet when I posted about Ms Astor.

Even though I knew it was imminent, I'm so saddened by this news.

Oh, I see that Rizzuto died only today. Brooke Astor actually died yesterday, so the announcement was already up when I woke up this morning.

I wrote a piece about him, too, as I grew up with the guy. Because in Fairfield County, I couldn't get the Sox on tel---well, you know the deal.

Yes, I went to your blog right away to see how you remembered him.
