fun pupdate

Tala and Cody

I told James I wanted some good shots of the pups for some new frames I bought. Allan and I are decent photographers, but more so of scenery than moving objects. Plus, our digital camera is not very good, and we've been too busy (and money is too tight) to deal with our better film camera. I knew James would oblige, but these are even better than I anticipated. Have a look.

The photos were taken on Victoria Day, when James and Lori and their puppy Cobalt were at our place. We were supposed to take all the dogs to Jack Darling Park, the huge leash-free park in Mississauga, but we couldn't get in! We're usually there on weekdays when there are maybe 10 cars in the whole parking lot. That Monday, the lot was filled to capacity, and the overflow lot was also completely full. That's one of the benefits to working weekends: we never see those crowds.

We ended up just barbecuing and hanging out in our backyard. Tala is very possessive of us around other dogs, and very territorial about her backyard. I'm a little concerned about folks bringing dogs to wmtc2 (I'll be in touch about that), and Cobalt was a bit of a guinea pig for the party. Tala wasn't aggressive - no teeth, no violence - but she was seriously dominant. As the day went on, she relaxed and the situation improved, which is a good sign.

I love these pictures!

Amazingly great!

The picture in the 4th row, second from the left -- is that the same for everybody? -- is the definitive picture of Cody.

It might not be. You can get the URL of a specific photo.

This is my favourite of the two of them together.

Wow, those are fantastic photos. I did not realize how cute Cody was. And all those were just on one day?

That is interesting about Tala. Noah is not very friendly to other dogs away from home, but he is a very good host when people and dogs come over. Took him to the dog beach once, and had to leave.

I wish I had James' trailer. Been wondering about if I could find a used one.

James brings out the best in her. :)

James has a nice SLR. He took about 300 shots, many of his dog, too, which are on a different set.

Lori pointed out that Tala was raised with a pack of dogs, and probably has a big need to work out the dominance pecking order. It's something we're going to work on. Luckily she's not aggressive or scary. It's obnoxious, but not dangerous.

I remember you said that about Noah being a great host. Cody is like that too. :)

Great shots! I especially LOVE the ones of Tala chewing on Cody's head.

About the visiting dog issues - we used to have summer parties around here where EVERYBODY brought dogs. At one time there was 10-15 dogs running around. It finally got out of control when one of the kids got bit so we finally put an end to that. And it was actually much more relaxed after that!! Before, we were all too busy watching our dogs (some of us!) and preoccupied by them to socialize.

But then again, maybe that was just our wild Yukon dogs! :)

I definitely have a few that are horrible hosts - everything is theirs and if an outside dog DARE come near their stuff.... look out!

That's exactly what I'm thinking - that it might be more fun without everyone's dogs here. I'll planning to consult by email w/ the dog folks.

But a party with 10-15 dogs sounds like so much fun. :)

Do Tala's ears ever collapse?

L-girl said...

They go back (flatten) when she's happy, when she says hello or gives affection. Gypsy's ears did the same thing.

David Cho said...

Does that mean she is unhappy in all of the pictures? She looks like she is having a good time though.

BTW, you should consider submitting the word "pupdate" to urbandictionary.com :)

She is having a great time! :)

Her ears flatten back in happy interaction with people. I guess it's a submissive/happy thing.

If there was another dog that she was in love with and submissive to, when she greeted that dog it would probably be with her ears flat. But if she's just romping around playing, her ears are up.

And of course when she's on her surveillance duties - keeping her yard free of evil birds and squirrels - her ears are waaay up. :)

Heh. I can't imagine it would be very useful slang. :)

Having an SLR with a 9-shots-per-second burst mode helps. :)

This past Saturday we went to Cherry Beach with Cobalt's sister's family, and ran off 655 shots. Those'll be going up on Flickr later this week.

I wish I had James' trailer. Been wondering about if I could find a used one.

We got ours at Urbane Cyclist for $300. They may be able to point you to a used one as well -- they keep a "for sale" board up in the shop.

James has a nice SLR. He took about 300 shots, many of his dog, too, which are on a different set.

There are three or four in the Tala/Cody set with Cobalt, but Cobalt found Tala a little overwhelming, so most of the shots I took of her were solo.

Lori pointed out that Tala was raised with a pack of dogs, and probably has a big need to work out the dominance pecking order.

Cobalt was not used to that at all. This visit was the only time we'd ever seen Cobalt actually roll over and submit to another dog.

But a party with 10-15 dogs sounds like so much fun. :)

For that, I think you might want to have it as a picnic at Jack Darling. :)

I meant to attend, not to host! :)

I've got my write-up up now.

Also, we took Cobalt to Cherry Beach to visit her sister Photon on Saturday. Photon's owners videotaped the wrestling match! They've got their write-up up on their blog, but I still have to sort through my photos.

I just tossed a few more photos of Cobalt up on the blog as well.
