pupdate 3

Big progress on the friendship front! Yesterday Cody and Tala played in the backyard, happily and without incident. Tala didn't bark in Cody's face, Cody didn't growl. Cody even initiated play a few times. They did the same this morning.

Relations inside the house are touchier, but also have progressed. Cody isn't growling as much, and Tala is respecting Cody's space more. Cody still seems depressed and annoyed, but less so.

Things are also progressing on the training front. Tala will have her PhD by the end of the month.

I thought Cody was always happy to give up the alpha dog position. What's different this time?

Cody's never had the alpha dog position.

It's not that she wants to dominate Tala. It's that she's intimidated, scared, put off by Tala's presence. Tala is young and full of energy, Cody is older and laid back - Cody wants to make sure Tala leaves her alone, gives her space.

Something like that, anyway. I'm probably oversimplifying. I get the impression that there's a very complicated dynamic going on, and only part of it is visible to us.

Maybe Allan can explain more...?

Speaking as the older sister of a younger sister, it sounds like standard sibling rivalry to me. :)

I'm just catching up on the doggie posts now. As a dog person, I think it's adorable and hilarious and fascinating, especially how Tala hasn't been in a house before. As an older sister, I want to give poor Cody a hug and a cookie. It's no fun having an interloper usurp your life without your even being consulted.

:-)

I guess that's the human equivalent. But they're not vying for more attention from us.

We are also! It's a joy to watch.

Rest easy knowing we are giving her lots of attention and love. And we're helping to protect her space when she needs it. She likes to relax by herself in the spare bedroom, and we don't allow Tala in there. It's Cody's Quiet Room. :)

Well, speaking as the younger sister of an older sister and brother, no one consulted me either. :)

They really do need to invent a way to consult all current and future prospective siblings before people add to their families :)

I am glad to hear Cody has her own quiet room. It's always good to see people taking into account their pets' needs as individuals instead of "She's a dog, therefore she needs X and Y but not Z." You guys are such good parents!

Thanks ImpStrump :-)

We try to be. They deserve it.
