surprise

I saw Dion on "One On One" last night, the extended interview show Peter Mansbridge hosts. This guy is really growing on me. He's very smart, and seems like a person of integrity. I like his ideas. What a Liberal government will do, of course, is another question, but as far as what Dion says, I can't find much to complain about.

Meanwhile, Jack Layton's agreement that a party leader should not have dual citizenship really turned me off. I don't worry about what a Neanderthal like Ezra Levant thinks. (France is going to unduly influence the decision of a man who was born in Canada and lived here all his life? The first Prime Minister of Canada wasn't born in Canada, for godsake.) But Layton! He should know better.

If an election was held tomorrow - and if I were eligible to vote! - I'd have a hard time pulling the lever for the NDP. This is a surprise to me.

"Pulling the lever" -- is that a common way to phrase it in the USA? I think I've used "mark an X" before. Funny how the idea of mechanical voting is a couple of generations old there, and still unheard of here.

Anyhow, I'm really looking forward to your impressions when you vote in your first election here. I wonder if you'll be amused or horrified or what. (At least you'll be reasonably sure that your vote will be counted...)

:-)

I used it purposely because I thought Canadians would take note. It's a common expression in NYC, because that's what is done there. You click little clicky things next to the candidates name, then pull a lever to record your vote.

I don't know if much of the rest of the US uses the expression.

(At least you'll be reasonably sure that your vote will be counted...)

This is all I care about.

Why would I be amused or horrified?

And thank you for looking forward to impressions at least two years away!! :)

Not only was Sir John A born in Britain, his memorial in the crypt at St Paul's Cathedral in London says "A British subject I was born, A British subject I will die".
(which has alot to do with the British Empire and the context of the times, but still...)

I agree, Jack Layton is way off the mark here and not just because I'm never giving up my Irish passport! But think of the number of dual citizens he must represent in the Danforth, very short-sighted and wrong-headed.

My thoughts exactly - I hope we can continue to not "find much to complain about" in a few months. Thus far, he's been saying all the right things as far as I'm concerned.

Love that you linked to The Tyee - One of our favourite BC publications. They have a lot of excellent writers . . . .
