Update. Now I'm receiving nasty emails from this filepile crew. Apparently I had the audacity to mention their secret sandbox in public and it made them cry.
Updated update. Now filepilers are emailing to apologize on behalf of their community, and to explain the confusion, and to attempt to taunt me. It's quite bizarre. From one of the emails:
Some other members are trying to figure out who sent you the nasty e-mails, but I wanted to apologize on the community's behalf. Most of us are pretty nice people, I swear, but like any online community, there are a few jerks out there. We don't like our own members to mention File Pile?! Oy.
We're fairly secretive -- it's one of our quirks -- but harmless. (Your commenter "Stewart" was in error: we're not an offshoot of SA, and forging UA strings isn't what we do.) We don't like our own members to mention File Pile, and evidently someone overreacted bigtime.
Again, my apologies for any distress that our more thoughtless members may have caused you.
I quoted the apology and nice parts of this email to be fair to the person who sent it. He asked me not to quote from or publish his email. Too bad.

Mentioning "filepile" is asking for trouble. It's an offshoot of sa that specialises in annoying people by forging UA strings. Don't sweat it.

I don't know what that means, but I don't sweat it. I just hit delete.
an offshoot of sa that specialises in ... forging UA strings.
What does this mean?
!!!
Commenting at the same time!

Really? Well, I think filepile is a big bunch of doodyheads! So there.

And from separate workplaces, too. :)

Hee hee. I thought it was funny that just "mentioning" them was "asking for trouble". Like they're the US DOD or sumpin.
there was no post, only a link to your sight posted, with no context. I'm very sorry if you've recieved rude responses, it's not how we operate. But a few bad apples always exist.
thanks.

Who the hell sent you this email, Tyler Durdan? "Rule #1... you do not talk about File Pile. Rule #2... you do NOT... TALK... about FILE PILE..." :)
Wow... This is weird. I'm so confused.
Love the "doodyheads" comment though!! hehehehehe.
Good grief. This whole thing is just WIERD.
Who on earth are the filepile people? Is this some kind of cult:)?!
Please explain to your regular and not so netsavvy readers!

Yes. Exactly! :))))

I second that request I think... Unless I'm asking for trouble... :-)
Yes, the Fight Club reference was just too obvious to pass up. :)

Ok, reader friends, here goes.
I use Statcounter to see approx how many people are visiting wmtc. In Statcounter, there is category called "came from" - referring links.
In "came from" I often find a comment on a blog, or the URL of a discussion board or forum, where someone has posted a link to wmtc.
I generally go to the blog, say thanks for the link. If it's a forum or discussion group, I often join, see what was written, leave a friendly comment if it's appropriate.
This is sometimes how I find wingnuts who are bashing me, Allan, wmtc, Canada... Recently this happened on a site called "fuckfrance.com".
I'm serious.
Anyway, today I saw a ton of people had come from a place called filepile.org. I wanted to stop by there and see what was posted about wmtc - but I couldn't get in. This is very unusual.
When I couldn't find or enter the discussion, I put up this post.
Apparently this pissed some people off!
Now you're up to date, except for the stupid comments I deleted and the stupid emails I'm not sharing. :)
Besides "Fight Club", I also thought of "Heathers". Everyone in File Pile is wearing the scrunchy.
My money's on Opus Dei ;)
As a side note, UA strings are "user agent" strings. When you visit a website, logged somewhere is the type of browser you're using, the operating system that browser is running on, etc. Some websites use this info for good reasons. They display a version of the website best tailored to your browser by determining your "ua string".
Opus Dei, sure! Or maybe they're the red-robed freaks from "Eyes Wide Shut".
Thanks for explaining UA strings, Matt. Do you also know what "offshoot of sa" means? Forging UA strings?
I am still confused about what filepile is about. All I see is a login screen.

Because it's locked, you can't get in unless you're a member.
I think it's just a discussion board, hang out, place to post links and stuff you find on the net - in other words, the usual. But for whatever reason (I'm trying to be nice here), the members keep it secret.
Oops, just checked my blog email, and there's more.
Here's a discussion that explains some things about File Pile. Apparently that login screen is a false front. Pretty clever.
The person who sent this says they're not an offshoot of "SA" (an internet group that stands for Something Awful) although there's some overlap in membership. Also they are not "nefarious". Whew, that's a relief.
Nefarious or no, I wish they'd stay the hell out of my came-froms. The one-way communication is obnoxious. (Which must be partly the point.)
Makes sense. They probably host/exchange files in the genere related to the topics on Something Awful (SA). It's a website. Wiki defines it better than I can:
"Something Awful, sometimes abbreviated to SA, is a comedy website based in Lee's Summit, Missouri, United States. It houses a variety of content, such as instant messaging pranks, digitally edited pictures, and humorous negative reviews of various forms of media. In addition, it has a very active set of forums, which in recent years have grown remarkably. Historically, it has been a force in the promotion and creation of various Internet phenomena."
Sorry, filepiler. I'm not welcome there, you're not welcome here.
I'm a member over there, and boy, are your ideas of what it is overblown. It's basically just a message board with image sharing features. We have to keep membership closed because of bandwidth issues. That developed into a running gag about keeping the site a secret, and it's traditional to either make cryptic remarks or pretend there's nothing there when people find out about us. It's nothing more nefarious than that. We are not an offshoot of SA; a lot of our users came from Metafilter, so if the site can be said to be an offshoot of anything, it's that. It's not our policy to forge UA strings. I don't know who is sending you nastygrams, but as in any community, we have a few jerks who take things to far.
Ryland, you're replying to a thread that is a year and a half old.
My ideas of what Filepile is came from Filepile members. I received obnoxious and threatening email telling me not to blog about Filepile.
Re offshoot of SA, that was addressed on this thread as well.
