the l word

The truth is, most of the good things about this country have been fought for by liberals. If conservatives had carried the day, blacks would still be in the back of the bus, women would be barefoot and pregnant, medical care would be on a cash-only basis, there'd be mouse feet in your breakfast cereal and workers would still be sleeping next to their machines.

This is what I've been meaning to ask. So the "L" in L-Girl stands for Liberal, not Laura?

Nope. Neither.

I don't know. I used it many years ago in a women's chat room. We used to have contests to see what it might stand for. It just stuck.

I suppose it once stood for Laura. Kind of.

Oh great. I once worked for a company whose acronym was GNP and nobody knew what it stood for. So we gave it "Geeks and Nerds in Pasadena," since the company was full of Cal Tech grads.

Lori used to do business with a company that made Internet software for VAX computers. The company was called TGV, which originally stood for "Two Guys and a VAX", then "Three Guys and a VAX", then for nothing specific...

They kept models of the French "Train A Grande Vitesse" (sp), aka TGV, all over the offices.

Punk bands and hip-hop groups use initials and are forever changing what they mean. I wonder who started that.

Wow, that's cool what Katha Pollitt says here and gets to the point!
